What will drive the markets this week?
Weekly Market Outlook – What will drive the markets this week This week is set to be quiet as traders wind down for the holidays. In the US, few economic and earnings reports are set for release in the first three days of the week as the market is set to close early on Thursday. In Europe, investors continue to follow progress on Brexit negotiation whose various deadlines have been missed in the past weeks.
Last Friday marked another “quadruple witching day” — the date when stock-index futures, stock-index options, stock options, and single-stock futures expire simultaneously, a potential source of volatility. Investors will be watching the shakeout from the massive S&P 500 rebalancing that came with Tesla’s entry to the index when Tesla first trades as a part of the index on Monday.
Equity investors will also be looking for the seasonal Santa Claus Rally phenomenon, in which stocks have tended to rally during the final five trading seasons of the year through the first two trading days of the New Year.
